Gun regulation is still resisted in America, despite the facts
Gun ownership in the United States is an issue which has been debated for many years. There have been numerous attempts to introduce stiffer gun control in some states but often this has been met with strong hostility by many Americans.
The Constitution states that all American citizens have the right to bear arms and this is a reference which is consistently used to fight off attempts to regulate gun ownership. Many conservatives accuse people who are against gun ownership as ’un-American'because the US Constitution is unquestionably the most important American document in existence.
With regards to the facts, however, the reality is that gun crime is a major issue in the US and is most common in poorer, deprived urban areas where there is a strong sense of gang culture. However, it occurs in all towns and cities, even in areas which are more affluent and generally less crime-ridden. Four US presidents have been murdered as a result of gun shots, including John F. Kennedy who was assassinated in Dallas, Texas in 1963.
It is estimated that there are more than 75,000 non-fatal gunshots in the country every year, which includes those that are deliberate and accidental. It is also estimated that there were over 28,000 gun-related deaths in the US in 1999, compared to just 42 in the UK in 2008. This is because the UK has much stricter gun control regulations, as does other European countries such as France and Germany.
One of the most important and perhaps most obvious points regarding gun crime is that guns do not save lives. Guns are designed to kill, while government gun regulation is designed to save lives. This is one way in which the US constitution is holding America back, preventing it from moving forward and setting the example that other countries have demonstrated. It is clear that America will continue to lose thousands of innocent lives in future years so long as government-led gun control is resisted by the people.
